6 Questions to Choose Your Next Art Piece with Intention

Updated: May 14

In this blog post, I’ll guide you through the 6 questions you can ask yourself to help you choose your next art piece with intention. A painting that resembles you and gives your home the identity & authenticity you are looking for.

Table of contents:

  • Local art - Do you know your local art market?

  • Wildlife, Western or Abstract Art - Which type of art talks to you?

  • Story telling art - Which story would you like the art piece to tell?

  • Emotions & Atmosphere

  • Size Matters

  • Original vs. High quality print

You are looking to enhance the mood of your home by investing into a beautiful and unique art piece but you do not know how or where to start. This article will give you a detailed structure that will help you make a decision that resembles you. Your decision.

Invest in local art. What does your local artist convey?

Check the art galleries that are close by. These galleries display artwork from local artists. Have a look at the art pieces and decide whether a painting from a local painter creates an impact on you. If a painting got your attention, check out the artist’s name and look up online to get more information. You might find their website, social media account(s) where the artist shares some of their story. Getting more information about the artist is a great way to ensure the authenticity and quality of their work as well as connect with the artist.

Wildlife, Contemporary or Abstract Art - Which type of art talks to you?

You can narrow down your search by knowing which type of art you prefer. Is it wildlife art, landscape art or do you prefer contemporary art, abstract art? Knowing this can guide your search for art galleries. There are galleries that display contemporary art and other art galleries that showcase landscape and wildlife art.

Story telling art - Which story would you like the art piece to tell?

This refers to the subject of the painting. Each painting conveys a story. For instance, the painting Majestic Balance is about culture and tradition. It tells the story of a Native American looking at the magnificent landscape below him and Rundle Mountain in front (Alberta, Canada).

You can opt for the strength and serene presence of the bison at home (see below).

Whether you prefer landscape, wildlife or abstract art, make sure that the art piece you are looking at has an impact on you.

Emotions & Atmosphere

Take some time to assess the atmosphere of your home, or the room you plan to hang the art piece in. There are at least two points to consider here: your interior decor and the atmosphere of the room. Each room in the house has a specific mood; for instance, a living room’s atmosphere may not be the same as the bedroom one.

Decide whether the art piece that you are looking at fits into the living room in terms of:

  • does it integrate into the decor of the room (is it aesthetically pleasing to me?) and,

  • does the emotion generated by the art piece go in line with the atmosphere of the room?

Size Matters

To create an atmosphere that is visually aesthetic, measure the art piece and decide whether it is too big or too small for the wall. A big painting on a narrow wall space might feel overwhelming. On the opposite side, a small art piece on a wide wall space might be unseen. Each wall has its perfect art piece. Let’s find the perfect balance!

Original vs. High quality print

Both original paintings and high quality prints convey the artist's essence.

Original paintings are unreproducible and unique; and they possess the touch and the energy of the artist. High quality prints are a great way of owning art in a more affordable way. You could even buy more than one art piece and create a wall art composition from the same artist if you really really their work! My prints are the same size as the original painting so that your experience of owning a print resembles to that of owning the original.
